Choosing Boots for Artificial Turf: The Wrong Sole Causes Injuries

Most pitches in Vietnam are artificial turf. The wrong studs do not just ruin the boot, they raise your risk of knee injury.

Most amateur players in Vietnam play on artificial turf, yet many buy boots for grip rather than for the surface. That is the most expensive mistake in the game.

Three soles, three surfaces

TF (turf) has many short studs and suits short artificial grass and five- or seven-a-side pitches. AG is designed for thicker artificial turf with rubber pellets. FG has long studs for natural grass.

Why FG on turf is dangerous

Long studs sink in, so when you rotate, the foot stays planted while the knee keeps turning. That is the classic mechanism for an ACL injury. If you own one pair, make it TF.

Sizing and care

Go half a size down from your street shoes and try them in the afternoon. Brush off rubber pellets, dry the sole and stuff newspaper in the toe. Never leave them in direct sun.

Replace them when the studs wear unevenly or the upper loses shape — a worn sole changes your contact point and causes heel and arch pain.
