V.League 2026: The Title Race Is Being Decided by Defences

Not attacks but goals conceded per game are shaping the title race. Here is what the first nine rounds show.

One thing stands out this V.League season: matches produce fewer goals than in the previous two campaigns, yet the number of chances has not fallen. Teams still create, but they no longer convert as easily.

Why defences are winning

Three factors. More sides use a back three, thickening the central block. Leading teams are willing to sit deeper and wait. And domestic goalkeeping has improved — saves inside the box are up roughly 12 percent year on year.

The numbers

The top four concede under 0.9 goals per game; the rest of the table concedes 1.6. Shooting accuracy across the league has dropped from 34 to 30 percent. A 0.7-goal gap per match becomes 18 goals over 26 rounds — 12 to 15 points.

Who is doing it right

The leaders are not the top scorers. They make the fewest clearances inside their own box, which means they stop moves before they reach the area. That is organised defending, not reactive defending.

The risk

The second half of the season is congested and pitches are uneven. Teams that rely on individual defenders suffer more than teams that rely on structure. One injury can remove half a system.

Watch goals conceded in the last 15 minutes. If a contender starts leaking late, fitness and squad depth are slipping — and the race turns at exactly that point.
